Student STEM Modeling & Simulation Challenge

ModSimConnected was a primary sponsor of this pilot competition run in Chesapeake, Virginia over the summer. The challenge culminated in students competing in a live simulation. Here's a look at two teams in the Junior and Senior divisions as they compete, strategize with one another, and nearly lose it all in the final round.

ModSimConnected is currently collaborating with the software developers at FlexSim to make this game available for others to deploy in their schools, libraries or other settings. Check back regularly to see where this project stands or follow FlexSim's profile for automated updates.

Training and Simulation Conference: Pretoria, South Africa

From September 25 - 27, AMD hosted the 2013 "Training and Simulation for Homeland Security" conference at the SANDF Centre for Conflict Simulation in Thaba Tshwane Pretoria. The underlying theme was the "World Economic Crisis". At Training and Simulation for Homeland Security they discussed training and simulation technologies, as well as live training, from major defence, military and high-tech industry stakeholders from across Africa and the world. The focus was squarely on training - the challenges, recent developments, changing needs - with simulation as the key enabler.

ModsimConnected created a unique app for their event. You can download it at iTunes and Google Play. This app and ModSimConnected will also be used to support their 2014 conference.

If we can help support a significant conference or event you're holding, please contact us.

Governor McDonnell Announces Development of Virginia’s First Modeling and Simulation Strategic Plan

Encourages Virginia ModSim Practitioners to Participate

RICHMOND – Governor Bob McDonnell today announced the development of the Commonwealth’s first modeling and simulation plan. The strategic plan is being developed in an effort to identify modeling and simulation assets and capabilities and to jumpstart collaboration and market development across Virginia. The effort is being led by Virginia’s Secretaries of Technology, Commerce and Trade, Education and Veterans Affairs and Homeland Security. All Virginia scientists, practitioners and companies that develop or utilize modeling and simulation applications or technologies are encouraged to participate.

Speaking about today’s announcement, Governor McDonnell said, “Virginia has a wealth of modeling and simulation assets and the production of this strategic plan will place an enhanced emphasis on modeling and simulation related economic development in the Commonwealth. Due to budget cuts in the U.S. Department of Defense, there is a need for the modeling and simulation industry to expand into new, and previously untargeted, growth areas. Critical to the development of the strategic plan for the Commonwealth will be the involvement of as many modeling and simulation practitioners as possible in order to comprehensively identify all Commonwealth assets that provide and utilize modeling and simulation products and services and define new and emerging market opportunities.”

Those interested in participating in the development of the strategic plan or learning more about the initiative should contact karen.jackson@governor.virginia.gov or visit www.modsimconnected.com to register.

The strategic plan will be completed December 1, 2013. Funding for the development of the strategic plan is being provided by the Department of Defense, Office of Economic Adjustment.

What is Modeling and Simulation (M&S)?

Modeling and Simulation is the use of models, including emulators, prototypes, simulators, and stimulators, either statically or over time, to develop data as a basis for making managerial or technical decisions. The terms "modeling" and "simulation" are often used interchangeably.

The use of modeling and simulation within engineering is well recognized. Simulation technology belongs to the tool set of engineers of all application domains and has been included in the body of knowledge of engineering management. M&S has already helped to reduce costs, increase the quality of products and systems, and document and archive lessons learned.
